Excuses?

atmosphear commented on an entry by me-ow. titled "Field Report" regarding make a smaller ecological footprint:

I weight about 80 kg (rough estimation for archaic non-metric units would be 170 lb) so my protein need is about 50-80 g à day, depending on how much I exercise (a related, nihilistic picture of me breaking bricks above ;).

By eating e.g. red lentils, beans, cereals and (organic) dairy products this amount is gained in a blink.

When I exercise I also use sometimes whey protein if I ‘really’ feel my muscles wanting extra protein. 65 g (or 1 dl) of whey gives

I’d say that people are generally way too concerned about their protein intake – or use it as an excuse to avoid any real change.

We humans naturally have a built-in desire for protein. In the Mother Africa, long before we (or even long before Homo Sapiens) invented weapons and group hunting every extra bit of protein would come in need (it’s the same with sugar and other carbs). Derived from this safety routine it’s understandable that we try to gather as much of protein and carbs as possible, but sadly this has lead to obesity.

I think that more real problem is that your school cafeteria offers too little of choise. I don’t know how common vegetarianism is in your neighborhood, but lately it has been a growing phenomena and I think that the school cateferia should also start providing more ethically made food. If they provided also vegetarian food there might also be a chance for others to reduce their meat-eating habits. So, contact them and suggest them to offer more choices.
